Taym is a highly flexible character, adapted to just about any setting (although I've recently found it difficult to play him outside of a particular one--for which see the Settings tab). His general storyline remains consistent: a relatively normal childhood in an upper middle class family, the son of an accountant and his eccentric and beautiful wife, surrounded by dogs, cats, reptiles, rodents, and horses at any given time.
In his teenage years he succumbed to the typical teenage rebellion, but his parents, entirely unsure of how to cope, didn't handle it well--by in turns being supportive and strict, they inadvertantly encouraged his bad habits, and Taym fell in, as the cliche goes, with a Bad Crowd.
Flash forward a few years and the slummin' it middle class man is a genuine hobo, living out of alleys or sometimes in cheap flats when he can hold a job as a bookie, a stableboy, a groomsman, nursing an alcohol and drug addiction. A brief turn towards prosperity led him into the arms of a woman who bore him a child and then broke off their engagement, sweeping their daughter away with her (or leaving her with Taym's family, in non-modern settings) as Taym descended back into a cycle of self-abuse--his own fault, although he naturally blames the child's mother. On his daughter he dotes, though he sees her rarely.
Recently I play Taym as having landed in another upsweep in his life, although still alienated from the wealth of his family. Depending on the setting Taym is a cowboy, a groomsman, a squire, or a dock labourer; in any case, he has settled precariously into a position of self-sufficiency punctuated and threatened by his constant returns to bad habits.
Taym has just one friend. He sees her rarely.
A womanizer and a homophobe, Taym was once the sort of brooding and quiet man who found a way with the women, although what little in the way of good looks he possessed then faded long ago in favour of yellow teeth, scarred skin, a weatherbeaten face, and a wrinkled brow. A bad back which creates a constantly hunched posture--occasionally self-consciously corrected mid-conversation--does not assist this at all. In short, Taym is not the prowling bachelor he once was--and is intensely aware of it, and thus a bit out of his depth around any man more capable than he is, which is, let's be honest, most of them.
Despite the fact that he cannot save himself, Taym is a sucker for anyone he thinks he can save. A Knight-on-a-White-Horse complex a mile wide is perhaps his best redeeming feature--although a failure to be the appropriate solution for a person's problem makes him bitter.
